Targeted Funding for Isolation

This page allows schools to view their Isolation Index as well as the population centres which have been used to determine the Index rating.

Schools in isolated areas receive additional operational funding to recognise the extra costs of accessing goods and services due to their relative isolation. For each school an Isolation Index has been calculated using the Isolation Index Formula:

0.8 × the school’s distance in kilometres from the nearest population centre of 5,000 or more
plus
the school’s distance in kilometres from the nearest population centre of 20,000 or more
plus
0.4 × the school’s distance in kilometres from the nearest population centre of 100,000 or more.

The total divided by 100 produces the index.

The Isolation Index is reviewed after each Census.

Mainland schools

Mainland schools with an Isolation Index of 1.65 or higher receive Targeted Funding for Isolation. This is calculated using the formula:

Base + (Isolation Index × Roll × $ per student)

Schools on designated islands

Schools on designated islands are given a notional Isolation Index, based on their relative isolation compared to mainland schools.
